WGA 2021 FEB: The Status of Girls Research
The Status of Girls three-part research series will be presented by Vicky Basra, President and CEO and Dr. Vanessa Patino Lydia, Vice President of Research of the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center. The presentation will highlight the research findings related to girls' educational attainment and racial and geographical disparities and indicators of well-being (depression, suicide ideation, substance use, supports). The context of middle and high school girls' experiences in the community, schools, and homes is central to understanding these outcomes. Recommendations highlight where investments can be made given the number of girls who are at greatest risk for trauma, mental health challenges, exploitation, and/ or system involvement. This includes raising community awareness and prioritizing policies and practices specific to prevention of victimization and violence, safe school environments, access to mental health and supports, and reducing use of the juvenile justice system due to lack of community-based services and punitive policies.
Please join your fellow WGA members and guests for this informative meeting.
